Alec understands. A large part of his choice to be immortal stemmed from the very thing. A desire to see his world be better, a desire to get a chance to see the changes he was hoping to set in motion actually take effect. He wants it to be a better place, and wants to see what that will be like.

"I hope you can. I'm sure you can," he adds because why not? This is the second world they find themselves in. Who's to say they won't eventually be able to travel from world to world as easily as blinking? Alec is hopeful of their future, even as he feels bleak about some of the things he's recently had to overcome.
