Farraige taps his staff against the ground, conjuring a ball of water before noticing just how massive of a fireball Vanyel is hurling out. Rather than his first plan, the ball of water rotates quickly in place and seems to vanish, replaced instead by wind. If the first volley of fire doesn't scare them away, perhaps stirring up a bit more of a storm might be enough to ward them off.

He at least has the good sense not to start an immediate firestorm, but he will use the wind to blow off spiders drawing near him or getting onto his clothes.
