but there are a number of things they don't expect, don't catch. they don't notice when vex goes into an odd little reverie and snaps back subtly but unmistakably different. and they certainly don't notice the faint, sub-seismic trembling of the metal in the door, the zips on their clothes, the pipes in the walls, or vex's inert cellphone resting on the table, that suggest that someone has come to find their boy.
