Don't worry, I'm from the 'don't trust anyone over thirty' generation. I consider myself old now.

That's The Outsiders, I believe. Westside Story is the Sharks and the Jets. It's Romeo and Juliet in the 50s

Oh right. I think I had to watch that in school but I didn't pay that much attention.
Maybe it was the same time I had to read The Outsiders.

I'll take that as acompliment.

It is so bizarre to think of that as being part of high school curriculum. I approve though. It's not my favorite in terms of the story, but the choreography is incredible..

Mostly because I was a teenager when it came out and I know my school never would have allowed it for a variety of reasons. I guess that's a sign things have changed for the better in some ways.

When were you a teenager again???

What could have possibly been wrong with that?

It came out when I was 15 or 16, I think? The early sixties, anyway.

Well, among other things, the fact that quite a lot of the conflict dealt with white teenage boys being upset about non-white boys moving into their neighborhood. That sort of racial conflict being shown that way would have upset quite a lot of the parents where I went to school.

You're from like... 70 years before me or something!! That's so cool.

Oh. I guess if it came out in my time it could be controversial too but I guess since it was old people got desensitized or something.

I'm not sure, exactly. I was born in 1947, and it was 1984 when I arrived here. From what I understand, I'm coming from at least twenty years before most people.

I would like to hope that race relations have gotten a little better since things were moving in a good direction for a few years where I'm from, but I've also seen them backsliding. It's never as easy as you'd like to get the world to make progress in those areas. But stories like that do have an impact, I think.

I'm from 2017! But you were alive for all the really cool stuff. That's awesome.

I guess it's still there's progress but like... not as much as people act like there is. There's some pretty good books and movies that come out in my time too! A lot of time they get mixed reactions out of people still. I dunno if they've changed anyone for the better.

I should tell you there's a lot of that cool stuff I don't remember that well. I'm sure the reputation of the 60s and 70s indulgences is another universal fact.

Yeah, that sounds about right. I can't say I can understand what it's like to be stereotyped for my race like some people I've known, but I've seen it with other things. Some people see something like boys kissing and they're joyful, others want to pick up the pitchforks. I don't think we'll ever get rid of bigots, in any universe. Which is why we should enjoy the good things we get.

YEAH. So you did all that stuff???

Yeah, I guess that part of it's better too but racists and bigots definitely are always going to be around as long as there's differences between people of any kind.
