text; daemon: shebad
[None of this is familiar to Kurt.
The last thing he remembers was a misstep in the Danger Room, falling toward (possible) certain doom and then a portal. Waking in an ocean wasn't something he'd planned for, gaining this strange thing called a 'daemon' isn't either, but most of all: he's certainly going to do everything in his power to avoid all this rain.
Seeking shelter wherever possible? There won't be any hesitation on this guy's end.]
so, is this downpour normal here?
i've been to places where it rains a lot, but honestly, this almost seems a little ridiculous.
[Guess he's never been to Washington.]
oh, and if anyone could give me more detailed information about this place, i'd greatly appreciate it. the map's helpful, yet ... [It's not a complaint, honestly!]
this is just definitely not new york
nor any place that i'm familiar with
which prompts me to ask: if i were to say 'mutant,' what is the first thing that would come to mind for you?

if i could build houses with stilts, perhaps, though that's only an idea for the duration of the rain.
let's pray it won't become a long-term thing.
rogue? hm, i can't say that i know the name.
did you happen to get any of the others' names before you were brought here? [He's hoping that the text doesn't sound desperate or anything. No reason to get his hopes up, only to have them be dashed if Magnus didn't know anyone else.]
no subject
Exactly! What you need for the rain, you might not need when it stops. And when it stops, you might need something else entirely. It could make for a lot of work. It makes me glad to be living off the ground floor!
Oh, yes. Let's see, there were a few. A Lana Baumgartner, Billy Kaplan, Erik Lehnsherr, someone who went by 'Vision.' I don't think they were all from the same timeline or universe, but some knew one another or had the same definition of mutant or metahuman that I just gave you.
no subject
wow uh
compared to you, i think i could still be considered a new citizen to america in that span of time.
but yes, that's where i live now. or did.
being on a second story would certainly be convenient for something like this.
i've been doing my best with sticking to spots where i won't have to get my feet wet. [Or any part of him, for that matter.]
the only name i recognize from that bunch is erik's. he's [a friend? friend of a friend?] an acquaintance of mine, but he and my professor are close.
i suppose he also helped us save the world back in my timeline.
[yeah, no big deal or anything.]
no subject
That seems wise. There's something odd about the rain. I don't think it's dangerous, but it doesn't seem totally natural either. It might be best to stay indoors when you can.
Rogue might've known that professor of yours. Maybe she's someone you'll meet in the future. In which case, it might be wiser for me not to reveal too much, hm?
Somehow "saving the world" doesn't surprise me much. [ He doesn't say this to take the wind from anyone's sails: it's extremely impressive. It's just that's what he expects from that group. Extremely impressive feats. ]
no subject
are you one of the vampires that fellow was talking about on the network?
not that vampires are the only immortal beings out there!
just assumed that it could be a possibility.
i thought something felt off about it, but can't imagine what that might be.
it'd be best to simply avoid it for now, which seems to be more difficult when you have no idea where you're going.
this 'daemon' is helpful, though.
that's a possibility! if so, then yes, let's keep the future where it belongs for now. [Which means he'll likely inquire about it at a later date.]
that's what superheroes are supposed to do, i think.
no subject
Yes, something a bit off. That's the only way I could think to describe it myself! It sounds wise to stay put for the time being. You'll no doubt be more successful exploring in better weather anyway, hm? In the meantime, do you need any food or supplies where you are?
Noted! My lips are sealed, so to speak. [ Curiosity, Kurt! You know what it does to cats. ]
I can't debate you on that definition. Superheroes do seem to be in the business of saving things, people, the world, the universe, etc.
no subject
that means you can do magic!
food might be good.
what other sort of 'supplies' could be provided?
anything that [can be used to hide?] might offer extra coverage?
such a peculiar saying! i like it, though. :D [True, but also consider: "satisfaction brought him back."]
as long as i'm training for it, i'll continue doing my best.
no subject
Tell me though, what do you mean by 'coverage?' A shield? Or a glamour, something to use to hide?
It's one I'm pretty fond of too! [ You're a smart one, Mr. Wagner. Yes, you are! ]
I'm sure I can make a few guesses, but what does that training typically involve?
no subject
portal?
as in, like, you can teleport?
something like an umbrella or a raincoat would work. honestly, anything with a hood at this point.
i've no idea what a 'glamour' is, but hide in what sort of fashion?
i'm still new to a lot of american customs, so anything i can learn, i'll take it.
basic battle tactics, how to work together as a team to the best of our abilities ...
uhm
honing our specific mutations?
if you can name it, we probably offer studies for it at the institute.
no subject
If you need to hide something on your person, a glamour would be an effective way of doing that. Simply put, it's magic that can change the appearance of a person or object.
Can I ask what customs you're most familiar with? There are a number of Americans here, from what I know. You might get a crash course!
That's impressive! It sounds like you work very hard. And the professor you mentioned, he's involved in your training/education?
no subject
that's exactly what i can do!
[Gosh, that would be nice to have.] do you have anything like that?
it'd be rather convenient if you did.
german, mostly. a bit of romanian, since my adoptive mother came from there.
i have to admit, learning it all would be great, so bring it on!
he is. charles teaches more than one thing, but he's best at genetics.
during the training, he supervises. makes sure things don't get too dicey for us.
no subject
I can easily create a glamour for someone who needs to mask part of their appearance. I use one all the time.
Those are both areas of the world where I haven't spent much time, unfortunately. But you never know who you'll run into here! That crash course may include worlds we've never heard of.
It makes sense he'd specialize in genetics. Does he also have an ability?
no subject
you make them and use one yourself? hm.
i'm assuming you use magic for that. [Can you tell he's stalling on actually asking for one?]
actually, now that you mention it, i'm currently getting a crash course from someone that came from a world i've not encountered.
considering he is the founder of a mutant school, it makes sense. he's an extremely powerful telepath.
no subject
Yes, I use magic to create them. It doesn't take an extraordinary amount of energy.
Oh? One that's pretty dissimilar to Earth?
It's an interesting endeavor. And it sounds like a valuable one, for you and your fellow students? [ Oh, telepath... ] A teacher you can't lie to, hm? I guess he'd always know if your 'my dog ate my homework' excuse was real or not.
no subject
you said it could only mask a part of someone's appearance.
does that include their skin?
from what i'm learning, yes.
it almost sounds like they're an entirely different planet.
i can't say that for sure, though. i'm still talking to them about it.
extremely so. some of us don't have anywhere else to go, aside from the school. it's nice that he's willing to help so many.
well ...
charles doesn't get into our heads without permission. i guess if someone gave him that to prove their dog did eat their homework, they'd have no reason to lie? although, we aren't usually allowed pets.
[Who knows how enforced that rule is? Not him.]
no subject
It's interesting, isn't it? The people we run across and the worlds we learn of other than our own. I've no doubt you'll meet more like the person you're talking about. It's that kind of city.
This professor of yours sounds like a good person! [ Magnus' reasons for saying so are two-fold: the first being that he takes people in when they have nowhere else to go. That's of great importance to him.
The second reason is that mention about not getting into people's heads without permission. Telepathy makes Magnus uneasy for that reason exactly, so it's good to know it's not being abused. ]
Do you want a pet?
no subject
if that's the case, i'd like to hear more about the people that i'll be living with and around.
there's much to be learned when it comes to other worlds or so it would seem.
he really is. maybe, if he's brought here like i was, you'll get a chance to meet him!
i think he'd really like you. [And not just because of the whole 'magic' thing, but because Magnus seems like a genuinely kind person-- something that he knows Charles would approve of.]
uhm well
i would like to have one, but that's okay. i don't need one to survive.
no subject
You're right! There's a great deal we can glean from each other, even if it's ultimately not something we can take back with us. We'll always have the memory, won't we? And who knows how much good it will do us to work together while we're all still here. It might be one reason we're gathered together in this city in the first place. What we can do for each other might be of key importance.
In that case, I'll be glad if we cross paths, assuming he does make an appearance! He sounds like he's had a positive impact on your life. [ Might be he's already a bit fond of Kurt from their brief interaction. ]
Well, there are a lot of things we don't need to survive, but that make our lives better, aren't there?
no subject
what we can do for each other? you think we're all here because it might actually have something to do with us coming together?
that's an interesting thought-- definitely not something i'd have assumed.
to be fair, i am trying to do less of that.
assuming, i mean.
it seems to only get me in trouble when i do it.
far more positive than where i'd been before.
which, uh, was a place that had taken me away from my family. [aaand that's all that needs to be said about that.
How endearing that Magnus is somewhat keen on him already, though.]
you make a good point.
though, having this daemon is sort of like having a pet, isn't it?
no subject
Ah, yes. Assumptions get everyone in trouble, in my experience. With that in mind, what I said is just a loose theory, but I think it has some merit. At least, I don't think it can hurt to try and band together, do you?
I see. Then I'm doubly grateful for the existence of this school you're talking about. [ It's not the same, not really, but he definitely has experience with being uprooted and... well. ]
Our daemons certainly take a lot of our attention! Or, mine and my husband's both seem to. They're quite the characters.
[ This comes through as the next message: ] I'M SORRY YOUR MESSAGE CANNOT BE DELIVERED AS TYPED PLEASE TRY AGAIN
As I was saying. Characters.
WOW MAGNUS what a face
i don't want to inconvenience you
or seem like it's something i need ... [Because it's not.]
not at all.
actually, i think it's a good idea for us to come together.
as am i.
if there comes a time where we return to my world, i'll give you the grand tour!
[The error message surprises Kurt, but he can't help grinning at the irony of the daemon flubbing their conversation.]
mine seems rather content with lying around my shoulders most of the time.
or getting into my lap at the most inconvenient moment.
he is truly angelic, isn't he? ✨
Do you think we'll be successful? In banding together.
And I'll remember that promise of a tour! Hopefully, it'll come before very long.
[ Magnus feigns irritation, but his daemon's eccentricities really delight him. That's the kinda guy he is. ]
Oh? And what does yours resemble?
he is and i love it
thank you very much [wait, they haven't--]
oh, i just realized that i don't know your name.
as long as we can all work together with very little problems, yes, i think things will be copacetic.
even better!! you'd get to meet more people like me sooner.
[So far, Kurt has yet to be truly upset by his own.]
from the looks of
it[he notes the change in the text:] excuse meshe resembles a silver ocelot.
✨✨✨
Copacetic indeed. I'll remember what you said!
Oh? Another big cat, hm? I wonder if she and Sophiad would get along.
cries ;; so much beautiful sparkle
that's quite a name you have there, magnus! a perfect title for a sorcerer, if i do say so myself.
my name's kurt and the pleasure's all mine.
i'm sometimes called 'nightcrawler,' too, though that's only a codename.
more like a giant kitten, but yes. [Which earns him a look. Kurt simply smiles innocently and returns to the conversation.]
they might! maybe they should have a playdate of sorts?
