I see. Then I must apologise. I believed you to be one I knew there. One whose company I enjoyed.
It was a world in which energy was collected, and used as power. That energy came from intimacy. It sounds strange, I know, but I have seen it work. I have benefitted from it working, so perhaps it is easier to accept it here.

Not at all. We were there for our own benefit.
I did however see it dying all around me as I left. I meant to go home, aware that my own world was in danger. Instead I came here.

I put to you that there are two possible scenarios here. One is the F.A.T.E.S has told us the truth, and the other is that they are lying. If they lie, then the question is why. How it benefits them, and what that might mean for us and our worlds. If they tell the truth, then our worlds are in peril, along with everyone we may care for. I cannot tell you which is real, but I can tell you I will not risk my people, or my kingdom, because I doubt. Until I know better, I intend to play their game. I will see where that takes me.

[ It was such a short time ago that they were secret. That they were stories, legends, tales told to frighten children. Things are different now. ]
Now instead of preying on them, we make arrangements. Deals, mutually beneficial pacts. Which I suppose only makes us a different kind of predator.

You do not know them as creatures willing to set aside morality for gain? You would be surprised what they will tolerate when it benefits them.

There are places, I will grant you, that do not welcome us. As in all things, it is an issue on which they do not always agree. Strangely, there are as many of them that fight for our rights, as wish to kill us for our difference.

[ But Loki only knew the heroes. He never had time to mingle with the common people. And even then, Loki is a creature of generalizations, despite all his intelligence. He can route anyone in a battle of wits, but even he can be narrow minded. ]
Why would humans care about anyone but their own? It is not their way.

I would not say they do. I would say they care about our gold in their coffers, and our stronger, faster, better soldiers in their ranks. Not to mention that our influence among business and industry is great, thanks to our investment in it for many, many centuries. We were already entrenched in that long before we came out of our coffins.
[ He hates that phrase, but uses it anyway. A roll of his eyes accompanies it. ]
We also picked our timing well. My people had been at war with a race known as the Fae, for a very long time. Their Doors to our world had long been closed, and we guarded them closely, but that magic only lasts for so long. We knew the Doors would open, and feared the Fae would reveal us to the humans on their terms. Instead, we did it ourselves, and found an ally against the invaders. Nothing brings people together like a common enemy.

We made more progress with the humans in war than we ever have in times of peace. Sometimes war is the easier state, depressing though that is.

For the moment. In truth, I find it difficult to trust in that. We have never known peace before. Would you believe in it?
