[ this was not a conscious posting. this was mjolnird deciding thor needed to do some socializing, get out there and share some feelings and make some friends and whine about family problems. he will not even be noticing that this was posted until the first comment alerts him. whoopsies. ]

[ sighing and looking into the sky, why me etc etc. it was actually kind of impressive, the way loki had maneuvered into power, had plotted against laufey, against the jotunns. if it hadn't have been so very insane of a thing to do, if it were actual war, if it wasn't an atrocity he was committing, he'd have been an amazing tactician.

sadly, it came from a boy angry, falling apart, and desperate, and thor hadn't known what to do with it, other than make it stop. still doesn't know what to do with it now. open dialogue was never their family's strong suit, and certainly not thor's. there's several things he types, deletes, and retypes, until finally just calling him. the message loki gets next is a voicemail, rather than text. ]

I'd meant you acted with the prowess of a ruler that I'd never had. [ his voice is soft, quite and somewhat private, talking with mjolnir laid on his chest, watching the ceiling of the apartment he'd taken to for the night. they'd had nights like this at home, laying out in the guards and watching for shooting stars while they mused. ] But in truth, you were my brother, and you were crumbling. I didn't know yet why, or how to stop it.

[ in the end, it was the same way he'd thought to stop all things before - brute force. ]

[ Thor can't hear much except the sound of Loki's sharp stuttering breaths, a sign he was more upset than he let on by Thor's words. But after that declaration, it slowly peters out into a normal pattern. Still his voice sounds jagged and wrecked. ]

I'm not a casualty of war. Not for him and not for you. I will not be.

Yes, it does.

[ the entire point of them bothering to talk in this moment they've had between the never ending whirlwind of chaos that's been their lives since the day thor led them to jotunheim. odin, the avengers, and all the other powerful forces in the nine realms, thor believes, will be enough to contain any new damage loki causes. but even with that assurance, it remains that there's a rift in both their lives.

loki's gone spiraling out of control, into anger and sorrow and bitterness, courting madness in a way that had him dropping himself into the empty abyss below the wrecked bifrost. it's a pattern thor knows will end him sooner rather than later. and thor? he wanders the palace halls alone now. he fights off threats to peace on his own, adventures across the realms by himself, always that empty space his brother used to fill. ]

What you or any of us believed is what started all of this. And it doesn't seem we're going anywhere for a while.

[ it's these small things thor knows and has come to read well over the years. the harsh breaths as if straining to contain something. the rapid blinks when something unexpected happens, the excess of certainty exuded when he isn't so much. no matter how far loki goes from him and how wild his wrath gets, thor still knows his brother. ]

I know. It was a bad analogy.

[ voice the kind of talking after lights out quiet, but there's a quirk of humor in that. he'd missed this, just talking to his brother. even when they're bickering, it's that piece of familiarity, of fondness that's engraved in his bones, that feels like comfort and home. ]

You're Loki. There's no one else like you. [ even before all the mess of late. he'd stuck out in asgard because of that, picked on by the idiots of the nobility, but thor'd always admired out unique and different his brother was. he'd thought the world of him. a sigh leaves him, some rustling as thor settles into the couch he's flopped on, tone lighter when he speaks again. ] And thank the Norns for that, because I don't think the realms could survive two of you. And I only have enough blood for one to make sport out of pincushioning me.

[ There's a rattle of breath as Loki chuckles, soft and tentative, rich in flavor but so easily snuffed out. Loki never had the same volume as Thor, save when it came to his temper. He screamed and yelled, scrapping his usual gentle voice raw. He no longer cries openly, but his tears were in his words. He had his arms curled around Sabella, resting his hands around her, his chin on her forehead, her fur brushing against his chin much like Thor's beard would. ]

You never got me into trouble for that. You could have gone to Odin and put a stop to all of it.

Whether we are trapped here or not, I will not discuss it. I am tired of speaking and not being listened to. I am heartsore of it.

[ As inviting as that validation might be, to finally get the list of grievances off his chest, Loki does not trust this offer. ]

And I do not think you would like what I have to say.

[ thor lets out an idly, low hum, like a verbal shrug. he'd known he could have when he was young, yes. there'd been a couple times he was angry enough to. but it'd been something between the two of them, their own competition and bringing in their parents would've spoiled it. ]

I could have. But it was much more fun to just throw you down the hill out back instead. [ because like hell he didn't try to get back at him for it. which probably started the cycle all over again, but whatever. ]

[ Loki could never compete with Thor when it came to brute strength. Hiding in plain sight was the easiest way to escape. ]

[there's a lot that Kara could ask about. Honestly, a lot that concerns her - like, you know, stabbing or... well, mostly the stabbing. and the war. War happens, and Kara knows that, but she's not sure how she feels about someone comfortable with war.]

The technique of a blunt weapon largely varies from anything bladed, more about the impact than the cut. Much closer to a mace.

You're a battle mage? My brother's always been a great sorcery, but in combat he sticks more to small blades than anything like a greatsword. I'm not really sure he can lift one without tripping over himself, come to think of it. Perhaps he could use the training partner.

[ since his return from his exile, anyway, when he'd finally pulled his head out of his own ass long enough to realize something was wrong with his brother. ]

Yes, my brother, Loki. The temporal warping around this world saw us arrive at different times. I'm more surprised he's been warding off the incoming murder than aiding it.

Yes, I imagine without the blade to add the necessary damage one would need to focus more on the strength of the impact itself. Unfortunately I am only accustomed to hammers for crafting with metals rather than combat. I've also yet to use a mace. It seems as though Eorzea has been lacking in blunt weapons.

A battle mage being one who fights with magic? If so, it would be an apt description. I am exceptionally skilled at magical combat, though am also fairly skilled at physical combat. There is satisfaction to be found in both. [ yes, it's very satisfying to blow shit up. and also very satisfying to stab enemies with a blade. just in totally different ways... ]
