It's complicated, but the short version? We protect the human world from the demon world

My guess is your Other World is what we'd call the demon world

When you talk about werewolves, vampires and fae, we have those too. And warlocks. Fae we call seelies, and altogether they're called Downworlders. Means they're half human, and the human world doesn't know about any of this. Sound familiar?

some of it is familiar, yeah. We don't have a name for the lot of us, besides like, supernatural creatures. and we're not all demons - demons are a very specific subspecies of the faes and they're the fucking worst

[ He does not like demons. He has a lot of reasons not to live demons. ]

the human world doesn't know about us either. i only learned about it all after i got bit, 5 years ago

Can you visit that demon world of yours?

With the right portal, the right magic? Maybe.

[ The thought does not fill Jace with pleasure. ]

They come to us. Our job is keeping them out, and that's already dangerous. Going to their world? Even the best Shadowhunter would know that's a suicide mission

You're right, they are the worst. The seelie are different. We can visit their world with their Queen's permission, but it's dangerous there too

Where you're from, is there peace between your supernaturals? Where do mundanes fit in?

mundanes, meaning, humans? They just don't know about us. It's not even that we need to hide so much, but they're just very oblivious.

There's kind of a hierarchy. Vampires are at the top, Weres are usually considered second class. Faes do their own thing - don't really see them much in cities, and I've only ever met a handful. They can't hide within human society as well as we can, because they look different.

so you don't have demons around all the time, then? only when they come through portals? ours come from the Other World. They're not native to my Earth.

Yeah, meaning humans. They don't know about us, either, but that doesn't always keep them safe
What I mean is, what protects them where you are? Because in my world that's what Shadowhunters do

Demons can come in a lot of ways. Sometimes they're summoned
They're around more often than I'd like.

I guess Vampires, generally, protect them. They're kind of... at top of our food chain, and they're in charge. They use us - guys like me - to keep the peace and other supes in check. They made the laws for us, but i think it's pretty much known all over that it's for everyone's best interests to keep humans in the dark.

Vampires who want to keep humans safe?

[ That's a new one for Jace. He knows vampires who follow the laws, sure. Vampires who are afraid enough of the Clave to stay in line, while others get away with what they can. Vampires in the role of Shadowhunters, though? That's definitely new. ]

Well, they need to keep eating. I Don't think think it's about keeping them safe rather than keeping them ignorant. Because if humanity was to find out about us, they'd freak out, and probably blow everything up.

[ If Jaden knew any better, he'd be quick to dismiss the idea that Vampires, in his world, are anything like Shadowhunters.

But he doesn't. ]

Vamps, more than anything, want to survive. And keeping the peace is the best way to do so.

Honestly, that gives me some hope for the vampires of my world. Maybe it's more than just the Clave keeping them in line

[ Though, he really doubts it. He's seen how they flout the rules even with the Clave in power. ]

so what's the Clave exactly? Is it just Shadowhunters?
Because how is that fair to your Downworlders? Are they treated like second class citizens?

[ He's curious, since he would be, in Jace's world, a Downworlder himself. ]

The Clave are the leaders of the Shadowhunters. Downworlders have their own leaders, but they've signed the Accords, and that means accepting the Clave's authority

They'll send criminals to us, and we keep the peace

Downworlders are our allies. Honestly, not everyone treats them like that. But they should

I wish a world existed where every species was represented where authority is concerned. At home, it's all for the vampires' gain, because they have a lot more reach and influence than the rest of us. And in your world, looks like Shadowhunters get the final say.

Some people are always left behind, apparently.

If you ever find a world that's really fair to every kind of person in it, point me to it

The Downworlders answer to us because of the Accords we all signed. They have their own leaders too

Wolves like you tend to have pack alphas. Vamps have their clans, the Seelie have their Queen

You want democracy, well think of each species like one State, and the Clave's the President. Believe me, there's worse systems we could have.

Maybe you think this way because you are a Shadowhunter.
I mean, if it works, good for you guys.

[ You still won't convince him, long term, probably, that's it's not leaning towards the Shadowhunters, what with them having the last word. Like his own world is geared towards the Vampires getting the upper hand. ]

So there are no lone wolves?

[ Jace won't deny that. He has no other perspective, though. He's certainly not in a position to speak for the Downworld, not after all they've been through with him. ]

I won't say there's none, but it's rare. I've heard of wild werewolves that I was always taught are dangerous. Packs tend to take care of their own. They'll help new wolves, teach them what they need to know

That's what I've seen them do, anyway. Of course if there's a wolf that's gone rogue, and hurts humans, it's a Shadowhunter problem.

I'm a lone wolf, but I wouldn't call myself rogue. Or dangerous.

I'm only dangerous to whoever threatens me.
