Mix and Mingle
Landmarks of Xistentia

It starts with the daemons, because of course it does. At sunset, they begin to ring and beep and urge you to follow directions through the city. For those with animate daemons, be they animals or people, the programs are even more intrusive. Pushing and pawing and urging you to get up and go. The destination is not far from the first reclaimed parts of the city— a tall tower covered in overgrown moss and trees, located near the beach, the Westernmost edge of the city. Even with the chaos of vegetation growing over it, it's clear that the building is a miracle of technology and style.

"Connection is essential," the daemon tells you. "However, genital contact is not required."

You have reached the Central Citadel, and it's time to party!

EARLY BIRDS

But F.A.T.E.S. is as susceptible to peer pressure and trendy trends as anyone else! Early birds will find that the atrium lounge is a true mess at first. Birds nesting in the ceiling, thorn plants all across the floors, and the bottles and cups at the white bar are empty. As parties go, this sucks. However, within a few minutes of the first arrivals, changes begin to overcome the club area visibly. It is exactly the same as the way the city has begun to accommodate the visitors, but far more accelerated. Soon, the lights begin to power on, filling the room with ambient illumination. Plants recede, but do not disappear entirely. High above, the ceiling suddenly morphs to display the starry night sky. And most importantly of all, there's booze.

With any luck, someone around here knows how to bartend, because F.A.T.E.S sure does not. Various liquors from across the multiverse are available, along with drink umbrellas, speared olives, mixers and wedges of fruit. However, the cocktails that automatically fill the glasses vary in taste from acceptable to horrific. Luckily, the bar does not keep anyone out.
FASHIONABLY LATE

If you're more than thirty minutes late, the kinks have worked themselves out. The party is now in full swing. F.A.T.E.S. has surrendered drink mixing duty to various refugees[1], resulting in much more palatable alcoholic beverages. Someone even found chicken fingers, which are making the rounds.

However, it appears that the invisible supercomputer is still trying to DJ. Predictably, the music ranges wildly based on the listeners-- one moment, you have 17th century lute music; the next, Trance. Blink 182 may even make a brief auditory appearance. It is not particularly easy to dance to this nightmarishly incoherent soundtrack, but it does provide a cross-section of multiversal experiences, for those of us who care about that kind of thing.

Alternatively, you can explore. The Central Citadel is filled with odd rooms. In the presence of only one or two explorers, the tidying effect doesn't happen nearly as quickly. Characters may find jungle-eaten conference spaces, computer laboratories, or even more sophisticated situation rooms thronged with vines and flowers. Somehow, the screens and monitors seem to work just fine with blossoms poking out of the harddrives. Rooms with beds are available as well, some of them already pre-carpeted with romantic roses. You might also find your way into a gym, where slightly rotted bokken and a dusty boxing ring nonetheless make for an interesting way to meet people who aren't into roses and laptops.
BONUS ADVENTURE: THE TEMPLE

Characters who meet new CR at the Citadel have a special experience. When the two (or more) individuals get to talking, their daemons both abruptly interrupt with a very important, not at all loaded question. "Do you want to see something cool?" If the daemon was too big to come inside, the question is posed via earpiece or whatever other device.

The correct answer is "Yes." And with that, the characters are abruptly transported to The Telexistence Temple, on the Easternmost edge of the city. The sudden quiet seems deafening; the darkness is almost blinding before one's eyes adjust to the lines of light running through the tall stone walls. It is much cooler here than it was at the Central Citadel, but it has its own eerie dignity.

"In the future, this is where you may access information about your worlds. Recovery information, save points, and both passive and active world entry points are located here." A beat. Possibly the daemon is watching you stumble around. "Most of the tools have been disabled in order to prevent damage from inebriated users."

However, two pieces of technology continue to cooperate. First, a huge slab of glossy black stone the height of a desk, emitting holographic Head Up Display upward, the Chronological Cartographer. Your character must touch the device. Immediately then, a bright flowing diagram of data begins to spin through the air, whirling with lines and circles and familiar names. It is a chart of the worlds your characters have lived in before and the people they have met in the past timeline. The splitting point to Xistentia is clearly marked, and your future here is a red line wavering in darkness. Toy with it a little, and you'll even be able to pull up significant dates, friendships, enemies. Moments of transformation. F.A.T.E.S. remembers it all, and it is only a quick teleport from the Citadel. (Fortunately, it is also a quick teleport back.)

Second, there is a monitor with another HUD. It displays a HUD with a single prompt: Amenities needed?[2]

Starting the next day, the Temple will be accessible to all characters at all hours. Those granted access the night before will be able to find their way back with companions.

Footnotes
  1. Some may be NPCs! Please avoid killing or maiming them without mod discussion first.

  2. Go here and fill out the form, reply to that comment, if your character is going to take F.A.TE.S. up on the amenities request.

Blue Sargent | The Raven Cycle | OTA

[personal profile] amplifyings 2017-06-02 06:39 am (UTC)(link)
( one : arriving at the party )

[ At first, Blue doesn't pay her daemon much attention as it skitters around anxiously at her feet, nudges at her ankles, and flails its limbs wildly -- and in the short time that she's had the tree-like creature as a companion, she's discovered that it must find some sort of joy in urgently demanding Blue's attention for absolutely no reason at all. -- she simply writes it off as more of the daemon's odd (read: annoying) behavior. It's when all the various noises start echoing from somewhere deep within the daemon's leaves that Blue finally takes notice.

That wasn't normal.

The directions Shrubd (a name she'd given her daemon as a joke, but had somehow stuck.) gives her are fairly easy to follow: a few turns here and there that don't take Blue very far from her own small apartment, and when she arrives at the Citadel, she's honestly a little awed by the sight of it all, by all the thick and vibrant green plant life that grows over everything, a perfect mixture of nature and civilization with the way flowers and vines wind over steel and concrete.

Following behind Shrubd, who skitters with excitement, nearly tripping over its branch-like limbs, Blue finds her way to where the party is.... well, not happening. Still in the early stages of coming together, it looks more like a mess of vegetation and various decor and Blue looks around curiously, questioningly. ]

Wait, what? [ Her gaze shoots to the daemon when it speaks, Blue's brows furrowing at the statement. ] What is that supposed to mean?

( two : the partying continues )

[ She didn't party much back Henrietta, but making a new life for oneself requires new habits, right? Trying new things. Stepping outside of one's comfort zone.

A task that Blue discovers is a hundred times easier when she's gotten at least one drink in her system -- although, the drink hadn't come without any consequence and subsequent complaints, the first one Blue had tried had tasted like something akin to dirt-flavored vodka.

And no matter how much Blue might love good old Mother Earth, she's sure that no one enjoys dirt vodka.

One drink leads Blue to another and it's not long before she's returning to the bar.... and it's not long after that before this small eccentric girl is grimacing, spitting out the mouthful of liquid she'd just half-swallowed down from her newly refilled glass.

Sorry if you happen to be in the splash zone. ]

Oh my God, that's disgusting!

( three : exploring the citadel )

[ While most people her age probably would have loved to spend the entire night partying and drinking until they couldn't see or walk straight, Blue grows bored of then party scene rather quickly. The music changes from one extreme to the next -- from classical to hard rock, from bass booming electronica to soft jazz -- which does little for creating any kind of ambience at all, the drinks are a little too strong for her -- she's had more than a couple, which leaves her steps a little wobbly as she takes them -- and a few had even tasted absolutely horrible, and most of the people in attendance are ones she doesn't know which had left her awkwardly standing alone for most of the time.

So, Blue allows her somewhat unsteady steps to lead her away from all the music, booze and dancing to the much quieter hallways and corridors lined with various doors. Both opened and closed. Some locked and others not. Green plant life sprouts from everywhere, climbing up the walls and across the ceiling, peeking from the tiniest cracks, and Blue runs her fingers along the foliage fondly as she walks.

The first room she finds open looks like a computer lab -- or rather, underneath all the vines and flowers, it does. -- and Blue ends up idly walking the perimeter of the room a few times over before all of the plant life starts to recede, vines unwinding from around the computers and desks until everything in the room appears to be completely usable.

(And this whole process would have been something that shocked Blue a little more had she not seen it happen already a few times before. And were her daemon not a walking, and sometimes talking, piece of flora.) ]

Hm. [ She hums, stepping up to one of the machines and looking it over curiously. Blue isn't exactly well versed when it comes to technology -- she's sure she was one of the few 18 year-olds that she knew who still struggled to work a smartphone. -- but that doesn't stop her from giving it a try. ] Now which button turns you on?

[ And with that, she proceeds to search for a button to power the computer on. ]

[ It's not that he shouldn't have expected it, but somehow, Ronan is still surprised to see Blue. He's at the bar himself, contemplating the different alcoholic concoctions on offer, but his head whips around at the familiar voice.

He almost rushes over, almost grabs her and pulls her into a hug. His fingers dig into his palms as he forces himself still, waits for his heart to not seem like it's about to jump right out of his throat before he turns fully around, scanning the room for Adam.

And then, he takes a deep breath, and, as nonchalantly as possible, slides over to Blue. ]

[ Blue's much too caught up in the atrocious flavor of her drink -- and getting a better tasting replacement, as her own was now covering most of the floor at her feet. Oops. -- to pay much mind to anyone around her. Her initial once over of the room hadn't proved successful in finding anyone she knew, or even anyone who looked vaguely familiar, so she's been keen to keep to herself since then.

Small talk with strangers wasn't exactly Blue Sargent's favorite pastime.

She notices Ronan -- or rather someone -- coming up next to her from out of the corner of her eye and in an instant, there's already a clipped retort of denial waiting on the tip of Blue's tongue. She didn't like making small talk with strangers at a party, much less did she want to do it with some random male.

(After all, she can count on one hand the number of boys that she's met and liked.)

But then, it's Ronan's voice and her mouth cracks into a wide, somewhat lopsided grin that gives way to a quiet laugh that shakes Blue's shoulders more than it does make noise. ]

[ The smile that graces Ronan's face might be the very first of the night that is actually sincere - discounting the ones he reserves for Adam. He offers the bottle he's pilfered from the bar to Blue, leaning back against the counter to look over at the room ahead of them.

It's a relief to have her there, but it raises questions, too. One especially is burning the tip of his tongue, and he lets out in a rush of air, sounding more worried than he wants to. ]

Where's Gansey?
amplifyings: (❃ something in her style)

[personal profile] amplifyings 2017-06-06 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
[ Ronan's smile is a rare thing, but it's familiar and comforting to Blue in its own ways. Like hearing your favorite song from your childhood on the radio and still knowing all of the words as you sing along. And in all this unknown that surrounds her, it's something of a relief to find something that she knows. Something that she can hold on to, something that will keep her grounded.

(Is it a weird thing for her to find that in Ronan? Unexpected? Likely. But weird? Not so much. She cares for him just as deeply as she does Gansey, Adam, and Noah.)

The sound of Gansey's name makes something in the center of her chest clench tightly, almost painfully. And for a moment, it feels like the wind has been knocked out of her. Gansey. He'd been there with her, trying to protect her from whatever it was that had a hold of Noah, but in all the inky blackness and earsplitting noise she'd lost him. The warmth of his body close to her disappearing moments before she'd found herself in the ocean. ]

You haven't found him either?

[ She doesn't want to entertain the idea that they're here without him, despite how it seems to be the case. ]
fiachdubh: (016)

[personal profile] fiachdubh 2017-06-06 12:31 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Unfortunately, they are here without him, and Blue's surprise is a bullet to Ronan's heart. They're not together, Gansey hasn't come here with her, and he wasn't with him and Adam, either.

Shit. Ronan gnaws on his leather bands for a second before he stops, startled into grabbing her chin, not as gently as he'd like, and turning her face towards him. She still has the marks from the Unmaker, when it took hold of Noah. Ronan remembers all too well meeting her and Gansey in the hospital, but he also remembers the scars fading slightly, the black eye disappearing.

It's stark and angry here, marring her skin in a way that makes her look badass and terrifying at the same time. She'd been so close to losing her eye. ]

When did you - get that? [ It probably sounds stupid, and he feels like he knows the answer. But that also means that he and Adam are from her future.

That she doesn't know about Gansey dying. ]
amplifyings: (❃ living is easy with eyes closed)

[personal profile] amplifyings 2017-06-07 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
[ Ronan's answer -- or lack thereof -- isn't at all reassuring. After all, if he did know where Gansey was, if they had all ended up here, he surely would have been more than happy to let her know, right? One of her palms rubs up and down the length of her arm in an obvious show of uneasy anxiety -- which her daemon seems to pick up on and nudges at her ankles as affectionately as a tiny tree can.

Blue's right about to open her mouth and question Ronan about something when suddenly his hand takes a hold of her chin, jerking her head to the side with a little more force than she'd anticipated. And considering she hadn't anticipated the action at all, any kind of force was surprising. ]

Ouch. Hey! What're you-- [ She cuts her words off with a huff and when Ronan questions her, Blue reaches up to carefully touch the wound in question. She hadn't taken any care of it -- no bandaging, no antiseptic, just a little water to clean whatever blood had dried on her skin. -- and it still looks relatively fresh even in its beginning stages of scabbing over. Inflamed, a little swollen at the edges, and accompanied by a dark smudge of violet-black underneath her eye. ]

After the party. We left early because things just didn't feel right and when we got back to my house, Noah -- Well, not really Noah -- but something was inside of him, like he was possessed by something really dark and really evil. [ Her brows furrow as she relives the memories inside of her head -- and for all she knows, Ronan's completely unaware of those events, she'd gone straight from there to here. No pit stop to visit Ronan and Adam in between. ] Gansey and I were trying to help, but... [ A shrug. Hopeless. Defeated. A look not very becoming of Blue. ] I don't know, it was all black everywhere and then, I was here.
fiachdubh: (023)

[personal profile] fiachdubh 2017-06-07 10:58 am (UTC)(link)
[ He lets go of her chin, eyes boring into hers, looking very serious. So she doesn't know about Gansey, she doesn't know about himself, on the verge of death. She doesn't know about his mother, and everything else that fell apart until Gansey sacrificed himself.

She doesn't know, and Ronan is pretty sure he can't tell her. ]

So you haven't gone to the hospital, yet?

[ There are some things he must be able to say, right? Things like Gansey telling him and Adam about their relationship - as if they were oblivious, blind idiots. Well, Adam might have been, considering his reaction, but Ronan hadn't really cared. Of course he hadn't cared, his crush on Gansey had long ago turned into a brotherly love.

He bites on the insides of his lips then, eyes scanning the room for Adam again, before he looks back at Blue. ]

Okay. Adam and I - the ones that are here, in this... world, with you? We're from your future. [ It sounds so insane. But Blue is used to time being funny. ] We've lived through you getting this injury. We came to see you in the hospital. Noah was possessed, and that - that thing, it possessed parts of Adam, too, later.

[ Ronan remembers, starkly, darkly, being attacked by Adam. After heated kisses and falling asleep tangled up in each other, the next time they touched was when Adam tried to gouge his eyes out. Not Adam. It hadn't been Adam. ]

It's connected to Cabeswater.
amplifyings: (❃ you think you've lost your love)

[personal profile] amplifyings 2017-06-08 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
[ Blue shakes her head in response. When could she have gotten to a hospital? One second she was standing inside of her house and the next she was on the verge of drowning -- swallowing saltwater as she struggled to find some kind of air to pull into her lungs to keep her alive. And, once she'd found herself on dry land, there wasn't a hospital in sight.

Not that she could tell, at least. So, she was stuck with having to make due with a little bit of fresh water and a lot of crossing her fingers. Who knew what kind of bacteria was floating around in the air and whether or not getting it into an open wound would have caused any serious damage.

(But, on the plus side: at least she still looks pretty badass, right?) ]

I probably should've, but it doesn't hurt much anymore. I cleaned it the best I could, so I think it'll be okay.

[ Ronan starts explaining everything and it makes Blue's head feel like it's spinning. Time definitely didn't move in straight lines for them, but this was about as weird of a thing as it had ever done. Ronan and Adam were from some point in her future and while she had literally a thousand different questions for him about it, she also knows just how dangerous it is knowing that sort of thing. She can't help the curiosity, though, growing up surrounded by people who could tell what the future held and being the only one who couldn't had made her covet that sort of knowledge and those possessing it.

Then, he adds the kicker about Cabeswater. ]

If it's connected to Cabeswater then.... [ Her legs feel a little wobbly. Probably not a good sign. ] I think I should sit down.

[ And she does just that, finding a nearby empty chair and plopping herself down on it. ]

Do you know what it is?

[He's just arriving (and watching the walking plant, there are stranger things between heaven and earth) when he hears Blue Sargent, short, unfashionable, furious, Ronan's perfect heterosexual soulmate, frankly, considering their tempers and their propensity to gravitate towards Richard Campbell Gansey III. He isn't sure who he expected, but probably not Blue - after all, Declan's life barely revolved around Ronan's circle of friends.

It would have been nice if someone from his own social circle decided to make the jump, but beggars, choosers, so on.]

[ Blue's daemon is as unhelpful as ever, repeating the same sentence over to her as though it's meaning was self-explanatory -- and she supposes it was, but that was kind of a big assumption to go making. Especially coming from such a small plant. -- leaving the girl increasingly frustrated and after around the third time of being led in circles by it, Blue resorts to giving it the cold shoulder.

Declan's voice startles Blue in all her pointedly annoyed silence and she whips her head to look at him, annoyance quickly morphing into genuine surprise. Declan Lynch -- whom Blue knows in the same way that anyone knows someone on the very fringes of their social circle. A combination of brief interactions and hearsay from others.

It's definitely surprising to see him, but if she's here then why couldn't anyone else in the world be? ]

[Declan nods up, to indicate the space in front of them, the signs of some kind of gathering.]

For whatever's going on here.

[His own daemon swoops in like a ghost, white and smooth, and lands on Declan's shoulder. I's an owl, the polar opposite in so many ways from Ronan's, but shockingly similar at the same time. Huge eyes to watch everything, to see everything.]

I didn't think I'd see you here.

[ Slowly but surely the space in front of them is coming together to look like.... well, nothing like any party that Blue's ever been too -- not that she's been to very many at all, but that's neither here nor there. The thick green vegetation that covers most of everything starts to edge away, music begins playing at a barely audible level, more party decor begins to emerge from seemingly nowhere. ]

And you [ Her pointedly annoyed look returns, this time aimed directly at her daemon, which manages to feign a look of complete confusion despite its lack of any features to indicate as such. ] kept saying I was going to be late.

[ Blue returns her attention to Declan when an owl lands on his shoulder -- looking like an inverted photograph of Ronan with the snow white bird on his shoulder and clean lines where Ronan was jagged edges. -- looking between the two curiously for a few short seconds. ]

You mean here-here? [ She points to her feet to indicate where she's standing. ]here-here? [ A vague gesture of her hand to indicate.... well, the entire damn universe. ]

[Declan laughs a little, then, and it's such a natural, charming sound, that one would almost refuse to believe that he was related to Ronan Lynch, human crowbar. If they didn't look so much alike it would almost seem impossible, but they do and so it isn't.]

Fashionably early.

She would have assumed their too-similar looks were nothing more than a coincidence. Didn't everyone supposedly have a twin out there in the world somewhere? Maybe Ronan's was just slightly older. ]

If there's no one to see it, then I think it's just called 'early'.

[ Wasn't that some of the point of being fashionably late? To make an entrance and be seen? ]

I could say the same to you. [ There's something matter-of-fact about her tone, something a little shit-eating about her grin. ] I'm not even sure where here is, honestly. I'm still trying to figure all that out.

[ Declan's reply earns a roll of Blue's eyes and the slightest shake of her head. The answer is about as helpful as the one given by her own daemon -- which was nothing more than constantly announcing that they'd arrived at The Central Citadel each time Blue questioned the location. ]

Her steps are a little uneasy, but still sure, and so he doesn't think she's too drunk that she can't handle herself. She'd hate him if he even considered entertaining the idea.

And yet, he's peeling himself from where he's been people watching against the wall and follows anyway, unwilling or unable to have either of his friends out of his sight for too long.

Thankfully, his daemon announces his arrival with the sound of its siren and it's tiny flashing lights, Adam ducking into the door after with a sheepish grin.

[ Technology and Blue don't have a very good -- or extensive -- history with one another. The computers back at her school were ancient, her encounters with smartphones were few and far between, and she honestly thinks the most advanced piece of technology that she actually knows how to use well is a graphing calculator she'd used back in Algebra.

A little embarrassing to admit, but Blue also didn't have the surplus of money to go spend on silly hi-tech toys.

She continues her grumbling and investigating right up until a tiny siren and flashing lights not only nearly scare the life right out of her, but they send her daemon skittering around the room in a panic.

(And Blue makes a mental note never to rely on it to protect her in the future.)

Following behind the small transforming car is Adam and Blue looks briefly between the two before offering Adam a smile in greeting. ]

[ It grinds its gears in response, shifting to its robot form. Touch activates the interface. Adam raises his eyebrows in response. ] Yeah. It kind of unlocks like, I don't know, the Wikipedia page of our life. Who we've known, where we've been. It's got all this data on us.

Why not? Grand entrances aren't your thing? [ She chuckles, once again letting her gaze settle on the Transformer -- her knowledge of the cartoon is limited at best, confined only to a few episodes she'd seen in passing and the few explosion-ridden films that had been made. ] Which one is it?

A mixture of things that seem important (like her height, weight, age, and blood type) and ones that seem not-so-important (like her favorite song from when she was in fourth grade, the full list of presents she'd received for 7th birthday, the exact coordinates of where she'd had her bike stolen at the start of 9th grade.). It all makes her blood run cold, makes her feel uncomfortably unsettled, but she can't keep from scrolling through all the information as though she hadn't been the one living it. ]

This is weird. How does it know all this stuff?

Barricade. So Barricaded now, I guess.

[ He thinks there was a Barricade in one of the movies. Gansey had played it on his laptop once, and Adam had been fascinated but ultimately fell asleep midway through like he always did every time he managed to sit down for more than five minutes at a time. ] What do you call yours? [ And of course, of course hers is a tree. A moving tree.

I don't know, but we'll find out.

[ Because he hates admitting that something is beyond him as much as he hates being told that someone else doesn't hold the information. Adam glances at the screen, but then looks away. He hadn't liked what his own held and truthfully, he hasn't any right to the information they've gathered on Blue either. So he keeps his head down and paces a little, still talking to her. ]

I don't like thinking we've been watched though.

[ Blue searches her mind for any memories of the Transformer movies and if the little car-turned-robot was one that she remembered. She does, but only vaguely, and not enough to remember any of the actual scenes that included it. ]

Shrub. [ She shrugs in an off-handed way. Blue hadn't at all been serious when she named it -- she's fairly certain that she'd been angrily trying to insult the poor thing -- but by the time she'd realized the mistake, the damage had already been done and her Daemon was announcing in its robotic voice that it would now be called Shrubd. And with that thought in mind, Blue corrects herself: ] Shrubd. [ And, yes, she's aware of how ridiculous of a name it is. ] It was an accident. Long story.

[ She looks through more of the information, curiously reading over various details that even she'd forgotten about and names of people that she'd only met for the briefest of seconds. Maybe they had been watched all this time, but by whom? And more importantly: ]

Why would someone -- something? -- need to watch us?

I've always felt like we're being watched.

[ Be it Whelk, or the Grey Man, or Greenmantle, or the Sleeper. Something has always had their eye on Gansey's merry men. It doesn't surprise him so much as make him feel oddly defeated, to know that even here, everything about him has been written down. He still feels sick from glancing at his father's name, a shaking feeling inside of his veins that he's doing his best to ignore. ]

If only we could find out what was here before. It's a little weird, right? The abandoned city coming to life when we arrived, the daemons, all this information. But no welcome committee. So who was here? And why aren't they here now?

This is more than just someone watching us. This isn't just our favorite color, or our favorite food, or our best friends... [ Blue pauses, her nose wrinkling as the realization dawns on her: ] This is someone writing down everything about us. I didn't even remember some of this stuff...

[ She feels as though she doesn't have to even read the words on the screen, she knows what they'll say, she knows the outcome of the events. Even the ones that are vague in Blue's memories don't require much more than a skimming over for them to return to her as vivid as ever. ]

Yeah. [ Blue nods firmly, earnestly, a spark of curiosity coming to life in the deep browns of her eyes. ] Someone had to build all this stuff, right? Cities don't just spring up out of thin air, [ Strange things happened, but that seemed more than a little weird... even for this place.

She turns away from the computer screen, looking down at the pair of daemons between her and Adam. ]
How much do you think they really know about this place?
