Late Summer Fair

I play my part and you play your game

Welcome to Xistentia's first fair, F.A.T.E.S.' excuse to mingle. The setup appears overnight on the edge of town, a nonsensical mash of themes and places from the multiverse. Haunted house and circus tent, facepainting, ferris wheel and carousel, game stands that seem to self-operate, dozens of empty shopfronts, self-regenerating popcorn stands. Pretty soon, however, the people start to come, bringing their own goods and wares. The population of Xistentia is 333, which is more than enough people to fill a fair.

As far as fair food goes, there are penis-shaped waffles^[NSFW] in various flavors, two-sticked popsicles for sharing with a partner, turkey legs, fried dough, cookies as big as your head, fried fish, fried lizards, glutinous fruits, and lembas.

And let's not forget, there is an abundance of alcohol everywhere. Beer, wine, you name it.

But of course, let's not forget the games. Many of them are low-key and prizes vary from the ability to change your daemon's color to any other natural hue, to free food, horrible writing pens, and stuffed animals. Games vary from whack-a-mole to bobbing for apples. Everything is free to eat, drink, and play, barring some excuses for barter with some of your friendly neighborhood natives.

Some games, however, are less casual if not necessarily more costly. The contests of finesse and strength come with special prizes from F.A.T.E.S. and...

Note that the "prizes" do not stack. Runner-up winners will not get multiple of the same type of prize, and those who experience a critical failure won't suffer particularly severe consequences. If your character receives a dream or a "unique item," you will receive a reply to your comment on the mod announcement with more information.

Kissing Booth

And what would a fair be, without a kissing booth?

Just like the rest of the fair, the odd thing is that there is of course no payment required.

Instead, a large and lovely lantern hangs behind the booth. It seems to glow a little brighter every time a kiss is transacted. It's hard to know exactly what this means, but considering that emotional intimacy lights the streets of the city, one might guess that F.A.T.E.S. is saving up this particular energy for something special.

But until then, it's a good excuse to make out.

[Will's mouth curls up into a warm smile at Nico's name.] He's my boyfriend. We're from the same world.

[As for his question about Apollo, that gets a laugh out of Will.] Yeah, among other things. Healing, music, the sun, light, archery, prophecy... and poetry. Just don't ever ask him to tell you one. For being the god of poetry, he's... really bad at it.

[ Wyatt's expression flashes with horror. He'd kissed Nico. Like, not just once, but a lot of times, and at least one of those times was pretty steamy. Some of the color drains from his face. He tries to recover, though, because while that absolutely puts a damper on things, he still doesn't want to get Nico in trouble. He clears his throat. ]

Right. Yeah, I actually didn't know he had a boyfriend. I'm sorry, man. [ So very sorry. He cannot actually articulate how sorry. ]

Uh, so can you like, tell the future? [ Subject change, subject change! ] I mean like if your dad is into prophecy. That'd be pretty cool.

[healingdork]

[It's probably not the best thing that Will actually laughs at Wyatt's reaction, looking amused.] You did something with him, didn't you? Don't worry about it. I love him, but we have an open relationship. He's done things with other people before, I've done things with other people before... [Less so on his end but.] It's okay, really. You're good.

I can't, no. [He's still grinning at him in an at ease and friendly manner.] That'd be the Oracle's job.

[bratpack]

[ Wyatt blinks.

On one hand, that's kind of a relief. And also kind of weird. An open relationship? That's nice and non-possessive of them. He wonders if he could ever reach the point of being that way, too. It's kind of like how Rafa and Hunter are. It's weird with them too.

On the other hand, Wyatt really needs to be harder to read than this, goddamn. ]

Uh. Well, that's...yeah, we kissed. A couple times. You're really okay with that? Cause the last thing I'd want to do is upset his boy, I ain't that kind of guy.

[ And then... ]

Is...the Oracle your sister?

[Don't worry, Wyatt. Will's just good at reading people. He nods in confirmation that he really is okay with Nico doing things with other people. Nico being happy is what's most important to him and if Nico is happy kissing other people, he's got no problem with it. He knows it doesn't mean Nico loves him any less.] It's... probably a bit complicated explaining why - involves another world that's not our own and not here - but yeah. It's fine, I swear.

The current one? No, she's isn't - just a friend. She's not even a demigod, just a regular human who is able to see through the Mist. In our world, we have this thing called the Mist that changes most people's perceptions of what they see so, for example, while demigods and people who can see through the Mist see a... giant hellhound, let's say, everyone else just sees a regular dog instead. It masks the mythological creatures and other stuff like that. Keeps the regular humans a bit safer, and us too because it hides what we can do too.

Okay. [ Wyatt still feels a little awkward, but now he feels like he shouldn't. He lifts his shoulders, trying to shrug it off. ] I mean, I know what that's like. My dad, Hunter, has more than one guy he's with. It was just new for me with him, and I didn't figure that was a thing most people...

[ A vague wave of his hand. ]

Anyways. Your Mist sounds super helpful, I wish we had something like that where I'm from. Is it like, a natural thing or did someone make a spell for it?

[healingdork]

Hunter... Rafa's Hunter? Rafa was my boss back in Eudio. [He'd never really interacted much with Hunter besides greeting him at their wedding, but Rafa he was familiar with.]

I can't remember exactly but I think either Hecate or a child of Hecate made it.

[bratpack]

[ Rafa's Hunter. Okay, so Rafa knows everyone here. That's not very surprising; it's almost like home. Wyatt smiles. ]

Well, he's my King. One of them, anyways. Hunter's my dad. He's the one who brought me to their kingdom, and then he and his other husband, Henry, took me in.

[ Wyatt has always felt slightly awkward around the kings. They're hard to reach, unless you're in their circle. Hunter is, but Wyatt's not. He's far more used to his pack than the vampires, in general. ]

Rafa's a lot of people's boss back home. What did you do for him?

[healingdork]

Huh. That's cool. [He idly wonders if that makes Wyatt a prince now.]

I was a medic and archery instructor at the place he ran with a friend of his.

[bratpack]

[ A thought that has not occurred to Wyatt. Probably best that it doesn't. ]

Oh.

[ He frowns. ]

That's pretty weird, man. I mean, not what you did. It's just weird to think of Rafa doing that. Are you like, actually friends with him?

He doesn't do stuff like run businesses where you're from?

I think of him as a friend, yeah. [Especially since he's made out with him before...]

They have businesses.

[ Wyatt sounds a little unsure. ]

But I don't know. He's the king, man. It's not like we hang out.
