RAIN & MEMORY SHARE

Characters: Ensemble cast, any/all characters of Xistentia!
Summary: Rain has come to the world, and with it, comes whacky memory share phenomena— certainly not all of which is wanted. Characters are driven to find shelter and solutions.
Date(s): September 30-October 7
Warnings/Notes: None specific, please warn in your subject headers

Awash In Memory
The landscape after cruelty which is, of course, a garden
The Rain

At first, it's just rain, expected to last a week. A swirl of silver cotton-candy clouds in the sky that rolls into a mist, and then a drizzle that freckles the gutters and chases people to their cars or into the shopfronts. It's nourishing and not too cold— a good excuse to share an umbrella or maybe just fitting of a shitty, blue mood if you would like to walk around in a billowy coat like the King of Pain.
Gimme Shelter

It can be a cute or enormously embarrassing way to meet people, pretty much up to you. Fall in step with someone under an offered umbrella, or dart around like a panic with a pizza box or plastic bag over your head. Maybe you'll just find an overhanging tree branch or store awning to tuck yourself under. Hopefully you're stuck with someone you like.

Quite a few restaurants seem to be offering rainy day specials, including Pop's Chock'lit Shoppe, comprised of hot cocoa and half-off a second cup if you're buying for a friend. You probably won't be the only one there.

However, for those of you who are taking the weather more seriously, the citadel has opened for shelter. Here, there are beds aplenty scattered throughout, and the bar and lounge is open with its terrible soundtrack as well as plentiful if repetitive food and drink. Residents are also exchanging resources of their own, including harvested foodstuffs and clothes. You can also check out the control room to see the meteorological analysis and forecast... which is behaving a little unpredictably, but-- it'll probably be fine.
Like My Mood

Alternatively, #mood.

Maybe everything sucks because you got stood up for a date or otherwise rejected recently-- it's a good time to storm around tragically in the street. Alternatively, if you're the happy type, there is an entire musical dedicated to the fine practice of dancing in the rain. Who needs musical accompaniment when you have the rhythmic drubbing of water on the earth and the sweet smell of petrichor?

Or maybe you're in the mood to talk. Certainly, there's an increasing sense of nostalgia going around that's stronger and more widespread than the average effect of poetic weather...
Oh Shit

However, the downpour steadily intensifies over the next few days, and soon after F.A.T.E.S. issues a warning— D.E.S.T.I.N.Y. has hijacked the climate. At first, there are only a few concerns— herds of animals coming into the city seeking shelter. Be careful if you find a herd of bison gathered under the highway overpass, or your kitchen is suddenly full of fairies. Hell, maybe you're a Good Samaritan, trying to rescue some hapless native cat or other.

But then it begins.

The Memory Share

As the rain grows heavy, the nostalgia turns into something unexpected. Characters who touch one another find themselves sharing brief sensory memory. These can vary from the sudden and terrible pain of old battle wounds, to the overwhelming, heart-pounding joy of welcoming a new child to the family. The scary thing is, these memory share are uncontrolled, and might come from even the shortest, most accidental touch.
The Telexistence Temple

News from your fellow residents: Era Ra and Ezekiel won visions during the fair. And now Era has information to share, that uploading memories at the Temple can lock and protect them from the involuntary release, as well as fortify the defenses of the city. She's also talking about some kind of a key hole there, which you can check out yourself. Weird!

You can teleport East from the Citadel to the Temple, or you can walk there on your own two legs. Weather allowing.

Within the Temple the chamber lays behind a large round door covered in inscrutable carvings. It's surprisingly bright in here now, in contrast to what Era's message held. It contains numerous strange beds, all of which are now online, having awakened in answer to the rainfall. The characters must lay down on while the daemons connect to a holographic interface.

From there, the memory share becomes intuitive even for the most technologically impaired of Xistentia residents.
The Temple Chamber

If you should choose to share, you may control who sees it; filter it to someone of your choice, or leave it open for everyone. You may post anonymously, but visual cues of identity cannot be erased. Pain is muted and impressionistic, but pleasure tends to be evocative enough. It's the way the mind works. Daemons will flag graphic or commonly disturbing material. With every new memory shared, the rain seems to be lessening.

You can also choose to lock it away, preventing anyone from seeing it for at least another month. Unfortunately your memory will not help to shield the city, but at least it will stop embarrassing you. Let's hope it doesn't provoke any intrusive questions in the meantime.

After 48 hours, enough memories have been shared. The sky over the city and the sphere of forest surround the urban bounds develops a barrier that looks almost liquid, translucent. Though residents can pass through it, it cuts the rain down to half. A few hours later, the storm wanes out and stops entirely. The shield also fades away, and the animals begin to ebb as well, back into the wild. It's only been a week, but it might feel much longer.

The memories will dissipate from storage in a month, regardless of whether or not they're viewed again.

I'll try, but it comes naturally. [ He joked, but there was some truth in that: all sex demons had naturally enhanced charm, as one could hardly feed if they were an oaf stumbling over their words. But Janus wasn't food to him, they were so much more and of course he wanted to charm the pants off of them. ]

My family? Oh, my kids are all different flowers, it'd probably be hard to maintain them all. Knox is definitely a tiger lily... [ He chuckled softly but it faded as he tried not to think about how much he missed them. He had to stop trying to think of their flowers before he got too deep. ] Vegetables might be fun. You know, growing our own food then seasoning them with our herbs.

[janus watches the emotions flicker over the demon's tawny face. they can tell that he's trying to avoid things. it is a very normal, funnily human thing to do— avoid pain. but janus suspects that these are the sorts of grief and suffering that need airing out sometimes, like mr. darling did in peter pan, taking his childhood dreams out of the drawers to look at them now and then before putting them back again. (janus most definitely read peter pan. they did not approve of him, but they read all about him.) (it was actually quite helpful for learning about fairy behavior.)

so they scrunch up closer to him in the bed, wiggling like a fish til they're stuck fast in the warm well of his body. lead by example. have compassion. all the best hunters know what they're fighting for, and they'd learned in mythian exactly how much that could mean.]

There's a kind of purple heather in Norway, that I'd plant for my mother, [they tell him.] Her daimon is the spirit of the oldest tree in a huge black forest. She is-- she was dying, because of the deforestation. But she has dreams all the time of when she was healthy and how much the green changed around her. The purple heather was her favorite. Maybe they'll guard over the bok choi and beans.

[ Janus was the sexiest wiggling fish that Zeke had ever seen or snuggled. And snuggle he did, his arms wrapped around his lover as securely as he could without squeezing the breath out of them. It may have been nice to have rubber arms, or tentacles, something where he could wrap multiple times around his body and never let go.

As he listened he found himself counting Janus' freckles again. One, two, three... oh. ]
Is she getting healthier now? I know humans have attempted conservation efforts. [ He didn't want to imagine what life would be like without his own mother. ] You have two, right? Mothers? Is the other one okay?

No, she isn't better, [they say a little ruefully.] It's just that -- time stopped. That's what we think, right?

[it's uncomfortable to believe that she's still burning for all eternity out there. rather like what one (proportionately!) angsty vinyl-clad faerie is concerned about for his husband.] It's what I think, [they decide. it's the implication in the temple, when they went to look at their timeline diagrammed out in hologram display.] The other one died, I think. [their voice is neutral when they say this.] But we'll bring them back.

Others have already begun to press back the ends of their worlds. Era and Aymeric, they went home recently. They lived more of their lives until D.E.S.T.I.N.Y. descended. Anything is possible. [their eyes flick up on his face for a moment, remembering they come from a different time than him, too. they suspect that none of this would have happened between them if ezekiel had had more time to get over them, but that's neither here nor there. maybe he'll go back like era had. maybe that will help.]

Do you wonder about your future?

[personal profile] salveo 2017-10-27 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Oh. [ That wasn't comforting. Well, it was in a way, the idea that time had stopped for his family. Still, the idea that Janus' mom is still sick and would be even when they returned bothered him. ] Yeah, we'll bring them back. And when we get back I'll figure something out for your mom. [ He said as if it were going to be that easy, but Zeke was a very determined demon. ]

I know my future. I'm going to get back to the world we saved, then fly to Florida and hold onto you and never let go. Or do I have to wait a few years for you to catch up first? I don't wanna freak out your younger self. [ He acted as if he had this all figured out and that everything was going to fall into place once D.E.S.T.I.N.Y.'s ass was kicked. Sure, he had his worries, but there was no point about worrying about it now. One step at a time. ]

Won't it be strange--?

[that janus, younger, wouldn't remember xistentia. wouldn't remember living together, and talking about their families, plotting a garden together, eating breakfast at the table (instead of brusquely and quickly at the sink, utilitarian, because janus didn't have time for such niceties before ezekiel).] I suppose— [that you could wait, then maybe the timelines would be the same, or close enough; maybe i would be me.

they stop because they realize they're doing it again. falling into promises, committing to something they doesn't seem feasible on any level. is zeke even their zeke? are they his janus? one step at a time. it's funny, they're reminding themselves of the same things, but because of slightly different reasons, with slightly different expectations. fleetingly, janus wonders how their younger self would take it, zeke swooping in, in the midst of their heartbreak. they realize that the incubus still doesn't know about arel.

but that's not relevant now. they're roommates with benefits. speculating about the future, casually. they had talked to alec about behaving maturely, no matter what you feel.]
I suppose those are all options, [they decide is the safe answer.]

Pity there isn't a way to grow you your own food too, [they say, offhandedly.] That would be quite a garden.

It'd be strange for you, yeah. I should probably wait until you catch up.

[ Zeke's mentality was such that in eight years he'd see this version of Janus, because somehow it would all line up like that. He had a very simplistic view of it all. ]

We can't? Bet we could figure out how...

[ Gotta be food seeds somewhere, right? Whatever happened, they'd figure it out together. ]
