Summary: The second wave of characters arrive in Xistentia unexpectedly early... only to face an unexpected threat. D.E.S.T.I.N.Y.'s multiversal attack is disrupting the energy flow, causing a very unusual stampede— of will-o'-wisps, that lure travelers off their path with thoughts. It's up to the residents of Xistentia to help the newcomers!

Wisp Mini-Event & Crash #2
Wish you were here. Love comes in waves
A WARNING FROM DAEMONS

Early in the morning, the glow of light to the East, where F.A.T.E.S. resides, begins to turn red in warning. Seconds later, all of the daemons begin to project the same message to their owners. The alarm continues to repeat until the characters acknowledge.
F.A.T.E.S. WARNING SYSTEM

Threat Assessment: Mild
Phenomenon Type: Native Creature Behavior
Predicted Duration: 24 hours

Due to the cosmic energy disruptions by D.E.S.T.I.N.Y., will-o'-wisps are engaging in unusual migratory activity. Residents are advised to remain in the city, or be on-guard against a low level of psychic influence. Wisps feed by creating visual, auditory, and olfactory illusions based on the viewer's needs and temptation. Individuals in compromised emotional states are more susceptible.

The migration will be complete in 24 hours.

It seems straightforward enough. But as dusk begins to fall, the distant sounds of crashing and outcry come from the beach once again. It's familiar-- the first wave of Xistentia residents arrived the exact same way only 2 weeks ago. They're going to need your help.
CRASH LAND INTO ME

For the second wave of Xistentia arrivals, the day is not nearly as ordinary.

Exit one dimension, enter the next. It was chaos: pressure against your ears, light bending in an impossible, unimaginable way. The very molecules of your body vibrating against one another. If you have windows, the view outside makes no sense. Even if not, your hands, your face, your feet seem like an uncertain thing. It's the feel of reality itself tearing apart, reshaping, reconnecting, thread by thread.

And suddenly, there's a beach— or ocean, whichever you land in. Smoke. Fire. Salt water churning up, fizzing around. It's dark— you've arrived at nightfall.

Maybe you crash, in a ship wrecking into sand. Maybe you merely stumble out of a portal, a ragged wormhole in space. Or maybe you fall off the back of an incredible steed, some creature that carried you into this place. Either way, there's pandemonium around you. Incredibly, severe injuries are far and few between— nobody's screaming about the dead. But you might have to help pull someone free of wreckage, or move quickly to salvage burning belongings from the landing craft. Maybe it's the crafts themselves, that you're trying to salvage.

Likely, you don't know them, these other strangers who arrived here[1]. Maybe you don't trust them— you just came out of a dying world, after all. But you all have one thing in common: you're here now.

When you get a second to breathe, the danger doesn't end... because that's when the wisps come.

At first, they're just a stream of pretty lights. Like fireflies, except that their illumination holds steady as they float through empty air. It's helpful for those of us who don't have night vision. However, as the minutes wear on, the terror and stress of the day starts to change to longing. And then the illusions begin. Voices of lost loved ones calling out, or flickers of familiar figures in the distance. The scent of burgers or cinnamon cake floating through the trees.

Maybe the ones you lost aren't lost after all. Maybe there's dessert out there. Isn't it tempting to follow? But watch your step-- there are ditches, fast-flowing rivers, and sleeping trolls you might run across. The wisps are impervious to these dangers, but you likely are not.
SAVE THEIR SOULS

As rescuers venture into the forests, the wisps' illusions change to accommodate the wishes and fears of the new intruders. Each person sees their own illusion, blind to the experiences of others. However, to be forewarned is to be forearmed. Resistance from the psychic intrusion is far easier when you know what you're dealing with. Still, that doesn't mean that persuading a traumatized apocalypse survivor is easy. They've been through a lot, and if you're claiming that they're seeing things that aren't there, who's to say you aren't imaginary, yourself?

And the trolls get cranky when their sleep is disturbed.

By morning, however, the wisps have cleared and the other creatures of Xistentia are off on their business. Maybe that's when you choose to come out and help, to find new refugees sleeping in trees, thickets, beach-wrecked fuselage, and other places they had found sanctuary for the night.
WELCOME TO THE CITY

The second wave of arrivals comes into a city that is very different from the one that the first refugees did. Sure, there are still animals and overgrown trees intruding in many buildings and streets— but the center looks very civilized now. Eight full city blocks where the hedges are groomed and the building facades are clean and orderly.

There are a number of fully operational businesses, including restaurants and a tailor. Agriculture is taking off gradually, albeit in a disorganized fashion, thanks to the fact most of the people involved are amateurs. Street lights, the beacons that sense character interactions, are fully operational throughout the day-- likewise, most of the city's functions work just fine now, including indoor lights, plumbing, electricity, etc. Cable isn't great, though. Depending on how badly your encounter with the Wisps was, you may also get acquainted with the hospital. It still looks shabby and moss-eaten, but its glowing recovery enhancement beds work very well. Better bring someone with you, though!

We now have Instagram!
There's a lot to explore, if you're into that. The two most prominent landmarks are the Central Citadel that overlooks the sea to the West, and the Temple on the Eastern edge of the forest. The former has a bar and lounge, and an oddly self-replenishing availability of liquor, as well as a variety of defunct audotitoriums, bedrooms and technology laboratories. The latter contains strange stone artefacts that blur the line between magic and technology, but are largely unresponsive to touch. The only exception is one sleek screen, black and shiny as volcano glass: an amenities request interface. Tell F.A.T.E.S. what you need.

Footnotes
  1. Some of these can be nameless, plot-device NPCs to facilitate interactions! But even in this case, please avoid gore in describing their current state of being. Anyone dead or catastrophically injured will have disappeared by the time your characters make it to Xistentia. There are no corpses or dying here.

  2. But like OOCly ask permission ofc.

[ Hearing Alec speak the words sets something right in Magnus. His kiss, that touch, these things all center him and give him focus as well, which is desperately needed right now. He breathes out and the words tumble from his lips as they have so many times before and will so many times to come, so help him. ] I love you too, Alexander. [ Freeing one hand, he reaches for Alec's, pressing his lips to the knuckles.

Giving a quick shake of his head, he tries to give some attention to the question, knowing it's imperative he answer. ]
Fine, so far as I can tell. I've healed several people already. [ That's in answer to the question of its accessibility. As for how much he's used? ] And I feel fine.

I promise. [ Here, he finds Alec's eye and tries to keep eye contact a moment, to emphasize the words. ] I'm okay, really. I can help. [ He laces their fingers together, brow furrowing again as he tries to look Alec over once more. ]

Are you positive you're all right? No other injuries? If your landing was anything like mine, it can't have been too smooth.

[ His other hand leaves Alec's back and he rocks backward on his feet very slightly so he can stave off any incoming protest, if there's any to be had. ] I wasn't hurt or anything. It was just [ he hums softly, giving a brief shrug of his shoulders ] bumpy, I guess.

[ He's kidding around just the littlest bit, perhaps from sheer relief. It hasn't occurred to him that he's still a little unsteady. After all, it's only seconds before his once-free hand is resting on Alec's shoulder again. ] I'm so glad you found me, Alec. [ It can't really be said enough. ]

[ he's not sure if he has any other injuries. he feels all stiff in his drying clothes, his body in over drive with the rush of the crash and his desperation to find his people on the beach. he hasn't taken the time to check, but he would know if it was bad. ]

No, nothing else, I don't think. Nothing a rune can't take care of. [ bumpy is right, but luckily, neither of them are severely hurt. it doesn't stop alec from eyeing magnus closely, watching for signs of pain, touching him consistently as if making sure every inch of him is where it should be.

as for the magic, magnus clearly has a different limit than the one alec would prefer, so he'll just keep an eye on him. at the first sign of severe weakness, he'll make him rest. for now he'll believe magnus is alright. what comes next is a fuzzy, confusing thing alec isn't focusing on in the least; only magnus' current well-being, finding clary, and seeking safety. that's what matters. after that, they can situate themselves, assess what they still have with them on their person, address the things claiming to be a program meant to guide them. alec has ignored his and he's not sure where it went. he wants to ask magnus about his own, but then magnus says he's glad he found him, and alec has to smile, a little. ]

We're okay, Magnus. [ he's just as relieved as he sounds.

he looks around them again, though the light around them doesn't stretch very far. ]

Let's go look for Clary. She must be looking for us too.

[ Adrenaline can make it hard to get a clear picture in any situation, never mind suddenly finding yourself stranded somewhere utterly foreign. Magnus knows as much about that jolt of energy and the exhaustion that typically follows it from experience. He might have to count on that and the feeling of pure elation that's still coursing through him thanks to the knowledge Alec is all right. Without those two things, it might be tempting to just sit here in the sand with his husband.

But, as Alec says, they need to look for Clary. They're okay, but they haven't found their friend yet. ]
Okay. All right. [ Mostly assuring himself here. ] I'm glad it's not serious, [ he iterates, breathing out. He's okay, his mind says, yet again.

He'll be keeping an eye on Alec too though. If it looks like he's hurt and needs help, Magnus will be quick to offer his strength. Alec's lent his numerous times in the past, so it'd only be fair, right?

Until such time, he will be careful though. Conserve his magic as much as he can, just in case it's needed for something more serious than a few cuts and scrapes. He'll hope that won't be necessary. Better though, to be prepared. He does channel a little more magic into his hand though, which causes the flame to brighten and given them a wider radius of light. He then rocks backward again, briefly using both his grip on Alec's hand and the support of Alec's shoulder for leverage to push himself to his feet.

Seems steady. Nonetheless, he doesn't let go of Alec. ]
Did you land on the beach also? [ he asks, glancing around. He's run into a few people, but maybe there are others elsewhere? ]

[ alec gets to his feet after magnus stands, brushing sand off of magnus' shoulders, hands feeling rough on the soft fabric of his jacket over his back and arms. it's both an excuse to keep touching him and because he knows magnus' clothes and keeping them clean are important to him.

alec squints out into the light, still fussing at magnus until his hand goes still on his arm, now just resting there. ]

I think so. Mostly in the water.

[ looking toward the trees, alec begins to worry a little more. the beach is one thing, but if others landed elsewhere, that broadly widens the area they have to search and the likelihood of them missing each other by seconds or never coming within sight of one another.

he badly wishes they had something of hers to track her with. ]

Maybe Clary's in the woods? Where should we start looking?

[ Alec's gesture puts a smile on Magnus' face, in spite of the hundred thoughts in his head that could easily evoke a much different expression. In the midst of all this chaos, that tiny little thought carries a long way. Makes things feel a little bit more normal.

Once Alec's hand goes still, Magnus raises his to cover it, the other still softly alight. ]
It was the same for me, I think. As I remember it. [ His uncertainty comes from not recollecting swimming to shore, but wonder if, perhaps he had. Easy enough to get soaked to the bone without going for a swim, but then again, everything's fuzzy. He wouldn't want to play that guessing game. Whatever happened, he's here now and so is Alec. And they need to turn their attention to Clary.

Wherever she might be. ]

It doesn't mean she isn't in the woods or that she didn't land elsewhere. [ Magnus is clearly thinking as he says this, looking back and forth along the line of the beach in either direction. ] I really don't want to split up, though we may be looking at a lot of ground to cover.

[ Actually, he looks extremely averse to the mention of being separate from Alec. Just saying the words seems to leave him a little upset, however hard he's trying not to get sidetracked.

Lips pursed, he looks Alec's way again. ]
It might be prudent, for now, to stay on the beach. But be ready to head inland if it looks like we need to seek shelter? [ Now he's worrying at his lip while thinking. ]

[ alec has an idea, suddenly, even though it might not be the correct one. but he's extremely tired, extremely relieved to have found magnus, and extremely worried about clary. if something happened to her, he wouldn't really forgive himself. he needs to do the utmost to find her in one piece, and while they could scour the beach, the trees, this entire place inch by inch, there might be a simpler way. ]

Did you get a... like an animal, telling you stuff about this place?

[ he looks around again, hoping to see a shape come toward him. he'd dismissed it with his panic, ignored it until it had wandered away with a huff.

but maybe they can ask for help. maybe it can help them track clary or has an idea of where she might be. ]

Maybe they have maps. [ he looks back a distance, pointing that way. ] Mine wandered off over there, says it's an assistance program or something.

[ At that, Magnus' expression shifts. He moves to raise his hand, casting an even broader path of light around them. As if summoned by the thought alone, there's a soft fluttering off to the side. It grows more noticeable in a second or two when the source becomes visible in the blue light of Magnus' magic. ]

There, [ he says, nodding toward the massive butterfly now circling near the edge of the lighted perimeter. ] What kind of animal approached you, sayang? [ Magnus sounds the closest to light-hearted he's sounded this entire time, a faint curiosity and the absolute barest tinge of amusement in the words. It's a nicer thing to talk about than some, though not a subject he wants to allow to distract him for long.

Still, he does want to know. So, he asks. They can move on past this quickly and onto the subject of finding Clary. Just... a moment. ]

I haven't talked much with my new friend there, but you're right, it would be wise to ask, wouldn't it? [ Any resource they can safely make use of, after all, right?

Even giant talking butterflies. Which is certainly more than enough to make the head spin a bit. ]

[ alec blinks at the sight of the butterfly, a bit awed. it's much bigger than any butterfly he's ever seen, and it's strikingly beautiful, which, well. feels perfectly accurate to him. he's still looking at it when he answers magnus' question, wanting to reach out to touch it but preferring not to, in case it startles the thing away, or damages it. ]

A snow leopard, I think. Big cat.

[ he turns back to magnus, hand still on his arm, when he notices it a shadow coming their way and into the light they're both creating. ]

There it is, [ he says, as his daemon comes to sit by their feet. it's not a fully grown snow leopard, not as massive as an adult one might be, but still... definitely a big cat.

alec had been too panicked until now to really talk to the thing, and there's still a trace of that, still restless when they haven't yet found clary. it might be more practical to take five minutes to find out more about where they are, though, than running around on an unknown beach in the hopes of finding her. ]

Can either of you find someone for us? [ he looks between the two of them, his daemon only looking at him and huffing, then to magnus in a i don't really know what i'm doing, here way. ]
lacquers: (only other person i've known who)

[personal profile] lacquers 2017-07-01 04:57 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Magnus seems equally enamored with Alec's answer, moreso when the leopard in question appears in front of them. He's smiling again, not a broad, energetic grin, but an expression that hints at some degree of relaxation. This place is strange, yes, but not all bad, right? This part seems particularly interesting to him.

There's no fear that he will let himself be distracted from what they're trying to do for long though. First, find Clary. That's the most important thing. Nonetheless, in order to achieve that, it's probably important to pay attention to these creatures, too. If they're here to help, as they ostensibly are.

If they have the capacity to locate her. ]

Very beautiful, [ he says, directing the words at Alec's daemon, whose expression initially causes him to raise a brow, and then toward Alec himself. At Alec's question, the butterfly flutters in closer, where it perches on the side of Magnus' shoulder. He doesn't seem bothered by this. ]

It would be easier if I knew the person's daemon. [ The voice sounds high and somewhat mechanical, most certainly coming from the broad-winged orange and black creature now holding onto Magnus' arm. He remains unmoving, maybe from a desire not to jostle her(?). They've barely interacted, but apparently they have an accord. ]

What other methods do we have available? [ His eye wanders to the snow leopard by their feet. ] Would it help if we told you her name?
helical: (217)

[personal profile] helical 2017-07-02 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
[ while magnus compliments alec's daemon, the thing only watches the butterfly. alec glances at it wearily, wondering how many traits it adopts from the form it takes, wondering if he'll have to hold it back lest it try pinning magnus' daemon down. ]

Perhaps. [ it says, eyeing alec now, as if waiting for something from him. he has no idea what, though, and is a little too frazzled to be focusing on social graces. ]

Her name's Clary. Clary Fray. [ he looks to magnus, looking kind of... regal, in a way, with the butterfly on his shoulder like that. if the situation wasn't what it was, he could enjoy it more, maybe wax poetic a little bit, but as it is, he shifts on his feet with impatience. ] Can you find her or not?

[ his hand on magnus' arm moves to take his hand in his now, almost without thinking. something warm to hold onto, and the constant reminder magnus is right here and safe. ]

[ Dragging himself from contemplation, Magnus listens to both the leopard and his husband, looking back and forth as they share that exchange. His hand slips easily into Alec's the second their palms touch and he raises his arm a little when his daemon once again takes flight. It circles in the air, heedless of whether or not it's being observed by the spotted cat below.

Or maybe it's very aware. ]
Clary Fray, [ it repeats in that same mechanical voice, as if reiterating a search term.

There's a moment of silence. A few more circles in the air, then: ]
She should be close by. [ Magnus' brow rises. ]

Should be? [ At that, he glances Alec's way for a moment. It's not, perhaps, the response he was expecting. "Should be" can mean a lot of things. ] Should be. The name 'Fray' is in my records.

[ the daemon at alec's feet does not lose sight of the butterfly, but doesn't look any more prepared to pounce. it does, however, speak in it's slightly robotic voice again. ]

Do you like to be chased? [ is all it says, clearly directed at the butterfly. alec tsks at it and waves a hand in its direction in a gesture that clearly means stop, but then lifts his attention back to the butterfly at the result of their inquiry, and shoots magnus a hopeful look. ]

That helps. [ should be isn't... promising, but the fact that she's in their records is, right? he communicates that with a simple squeeze of their linked hands before looking around again. ] Which direction should we start to look, any idea?

[personal profile] lacquers 2017-07-05 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
[ The butterfly flutters its wings rapidly without flying away. It then ducks close to the leopard. ] Do you?

[ Magnus gives Alec a look that seems to very clearly indicate he thinks they've ended up with a pair of characters for guides in this brand-new world. His not-so-little fluttering friend is about to prove as much when it rises to eye-height with Alec. ] How fast can she move?

[ To that, Magnus makes a somewhat disapproving sound. ]

That's an interesting question. [ He shifts his hand in Alec's, linking their fingers together more closely. ]

It might be useful. I can't say for sure. It isn't in my nature to speculate, but your questions require me to.
helical: (005)

[personal profile] helical 2017-07-07 01:08 pm (UTC)(link)
[ his daemon seems poised to say something else, but alec interrupts quickly to keep that from escalating. he doesn't have the patience, right now, and isn't focused enough to be able to put up with strange computer programs bickering. that part they can figure out later.

(the snow leopard seems mildly offended to be cut off, turning her head away from them all in obvious feigned disinterest.) ]

Fast, if she's using a rune. [ he might have been able to estimate, was he thinking more clearly. magnus' hand in his own already helps him focus somewhat.

he glances at magnus, sharing his look over these... programs with personalities they've apparently been assigned. ]

[ Magnus returns the look, then casts his eye in the direction of the butterfly, as if trying to translate that expression into some nuance the creature will understand.

It's unclear if it works. ]

That seems uncertain. My calculations are too nonspecific to be helpful. It would be wise to seek shelter in the forest, but if she is looking for you as you are looking for her, then--

She might still be on the beach, [ Magnus finishes, cutting in. Maybe for the purpose of encouraging the daemon to be silent a moment and maybe for the purpose of directing the conversation back to action. ] You came from the same direction as I, Alec. Maybe we should continue heading this way? [ He points with his free hand to the side of the beach opposite the side where Alec approached him.

It's still dark, but...

Maybe. ]

[ alec stares off where magnus indicates, nodding after a moment. ]

Yeah, let's head out that way. Once we stop seeing evidence of a crash, we can turn back. I don't think she'd keep going past that.

[ it's not what alec would do, anyway, and it's wiser to search the concerned area first before venturing further. she must know, too, that they'd be looking for her. not only that, but knowing clary, she's running around helping people up from the sand, so it's likely she hasn't gone too far. ]

She might be helping people, so let's stop if we see anyone and ask around?

[ his hand tugs on magnus' gently, heading toward the part of the beach they haven't yet searched. alec feels calmer now, knowing that clary is here somewhere. knowing she's tough enough to have made it in one piece, and knowing they'll soon be reunited with their friend.

everything else is confusing, the daemons most of all, but magnus is here, clary is nearby, and once they're together they can form a plan and find shelter. ]
