Really, brother. I stabbed you with kitchen knives. They barely left a mark.

I believe the point Mjölnir was trying to make was more the fact the actual act was committed and less the intensity of it.

Also, it hurt. All stabbings usually hurt.

Oh, please. Sif's beatings hurt far worse than my throwing knives.

Sif was not my brother, and I generally always knew when to expect those.

[ either when sparring with her, or when he was being a jackass. the latter harder to pin down, but at least always deserved. ]

Yours came from nowhere, utterly uncalled for. [ probably. maybe. it's possible this is not an objective opinion. ]

If you expected it, that would defeat the point.

[ It's oddly sentimental though, to hear Thor bring up the past. ]

Was it uncalled for when you stole my dessert off my plate? Or the time you dropped your mead on my favourite spell book?

[ that is what surprise stabbings are, loki! mean! but yes, this is sort of endearing, and if he were actually much offended or traumatized by any of this, he wouldn't be talking about it so casually. thus is how they operate. ]

Alright 1: you weren't even eating it, snails go through meals faster than you and 2: I'd already had 4 pints of mead by that point and I tripped.

Of making you pay for it.

[ The nostalgia makes his eyes itch. Like there's something warmer lurking under his skin that he's forgotten. ]

Some of us like to savor their food instead of inhaling it. And secondly, it is entirely your fault you drank that much and tripped. I was well within my rights to stab you.

Most of us like to devote less than half a day's time to a single dish.

[ this would be about the time mocking faces would be made and thor would be giving up on any actual defense of himself, just devoting to bickering because it's what they do best. ]

Perhaps if you hadn't left your spell book lying around carelessly and put it on a shelf where books belong it wouldn't have been casualty, had you thought of that?

I'm sorry, what part of the chronicles of Asgardian law put 'revenge stabbing' as a given right to all brothers? Did I sleep through that lesson?

And it is no wonder you struggle to put on your clothes, the way you eat.

I was reading it! I put it down for one second and it was drenched in ale.

Which lessons didn't you sleep through?

What struggle? I haven't struggled dressing myself since we were both toddlers, and you did just as well. It was you that had their robes too long and tripped on his hems going up stairs.

[ except the little armor belt fastenings on the backs of some armor pieces. having huge arms makes reaching behind you really difficult, okay??? ]

Enough I know well enough rampant knifing isn't condoned even in princes.

And yet, I wasn't the one who was so keen on being a Valkyrie, I stole mother's clothes to pretend to be one.

Well it is a good thing I am no longer a prince of Asgard now, isn't it?

There is no shame to be had in aspiring to a league of legendary warriors. It was mother's battle garb, not as if I was prancing around in her dresses and heels.

[ probably not, anyway. ]

That is besides the point, and yes you are, and don't act like you'd stop doing it now if you still considered yourself one.

Mother's battle garb didn't have frills on it, Thor.

Honestly, it feels like a civic duty at this point. You still haven't learned how to dodge.

It might have. Mother's always been a fan of those flowy things.

So kind of you to take it upon yourself to become my combat tutor. Now that I'm all grown up and Asgard's finest warrior and all. Where would I be without such charity?

Oh. I know. Not hemorrhaging blood.

What's a few pints here and there? Well. Good thing you're fairly bad at stabbing anyway.

Definitely bad at that, if that was the goal this whole time. You'd think you'd try something a little different after the first few centuries of it.

[ A pause. ]

I did.

The results vary, though.

And yet, 1000 years later. Still not dead.

One might even think your heart just isn't in it.

[ Wasn't it? He doesn't know anymore. Sometimes it feels like his thoughts and desires outpace his heart completely. His regrets never seem to end and he never wants to look back. The truth is, sometimes he just doesn't know why, all he knows is that the idea of going back to what he once was is terrifying. Terrible as he is, he'll still take it over being Odin's stolen relic.

Wouldn't he? ]

Who knows?

[ he'd actually wondered, several times, if they were truly that far gone. he'd thought, maybe, when loki dropped him from the airship. and yet, how many chances has he truly had? how many times could he have cut through thor's throat rather than his gut?

maybe the notion changes as easily as his moods these days, prone to dangerous and sudden whims. one moment loki will throw him from the sky and let him fall to his death, the next, he'll cast himself in front of a monster to save him. perhaps this is how they are now - a mystery to each other. ]

Certainly no one present.

[ Loki swallows his bitter laugh. All of these stories in the end are merely stories. No one knows Loki. He barely knows himself on a good day. Sentiment. If Thor does not know, then no one does. Laufeyson, Odinson. No one's son. ]

That is probably for the best.

For the best of who?

[ it certainly does thor no service to be so utterly lost to loki's feelings towards him and where they ought to stand. does it really serve loki well? seems exhausting, and deeply lonely. ]
